The Sophie B. Wright High School Renovation project, built for the Louisiana Department of Education Recovery School District, included a 94,206-square-foot renovation and a 20,000-square-foot addition to the existing three-story historic high school campus in New Orleans, LA. The facility, which was damaged by Hurricane Katrina, was originally built in 1920 and supports 425 students in ninth through 12th grades. The project included the addition of a gymnasium, restoration of a historical 22-classroom building, and renovations to science laboratories, music rooms, the kitchen, media center, and auditorium. The project also included refurbishment of cypress-paned windows and heart pine floors, restoration of the school’s original five wood staircases, abatement of asbestos, and updating the facility to meet current safety and code compliance standards. The facility features a thin-set terrazzo coating on concrete slab floors and an SBS roof. The high school achieved LEED Silver Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for optimized energy performance, sustainable features, and indoor environmental air quality. Due to CORE’s restoration efforts, Sophie B. Wright High School can now serve generations of students to come.
