The Gateway Polytechnic Academy project, built for Queen Creek Unified School District, included the new construction of an 80,000-square-foot elementary school located in Mesa, AZ. The facility supports six buildings and 750 students enrolled in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The school’s atrium pays tribute to the history of aviation through models on the atrium ceiling and aviation themed ceiling tiles. The project also features a stackable glass nana wall for the media center and industrial handrails. Site work consisted of exterior basketball courts, baseball and soccer fields, playgrounds, an off-site deceleration lane for traffic control, sidewalks, two school entrances, and a parking area with bus drop off lanes. The elementary school exterior was constructed of masonry metal paneling, architectural masonry pop outs, and large curtain wall pop outs into the single enclosed atrium. A footings and slab on grade foundation, masonry structural frame, and coated foam roof completed the construction. Due to CORE’s virtual construction techniques mitigating project rework, the Gateway Polytechnic Academy project was completed with the best architectural and maintenance value for the school district.
