The RTC Villanova Maintenance Facility Renovation and Expansion project, built for the Regional Transportation Commission, included selective demolition, extensive restoration and renovation, and new additions to the 57,613-square-foot transportation campus located in Reno, NV. The facility functions as a transportation hub for the city’s diesel-hybrid electric buses, articulated buses, and electric buses serving the Reno-Sparks community. This complicated project involved the construction of new buildings insersect under the freeway, but do not actually connect to the freeway. It also featured the removal and replacement of large rooftop units through the use of a crane that hung feet from the active freeway, modifications of bus entrance/exits onto the freeway, and the removal of a waste oil tank and sand oil interceptor that were 30-feet deep and feet from existing occupied structures and freeway bridge columns. The project further included the construction of a new maintenance shop which houses innovative bus lifts that are the first of their kind, the installation of new overhead coiling doors, expanded storage areas, and various landscaping. The transportation building additions were constructed on spread footing foundations with pre-engineered metal frames. Exteriors of metal panels and TPO membrane roofs completed the construction. Due to CORE’s preconstruction planning and construction efforts, the RTC Villanova Maintenance Facility Renovation and Expansion project was completed while remaining fully operational, including full service maintenance and dispatch of 80+ buses, during a historic winter.
