The Lower Buckeye Jail project, built for Maricopa County Criminal Justice, included the new construction of a 670,237 square foot criminal detention facility located in Phoenix, AZ. The facility houses inmate living areas consisting of four direct supervision style housing units and 12 tower style observation units for two housing pods, in which to accommodate approximately 2,382 inmates, and supports a 60-bed Medical Infirmary and a 210-bed Mental Health Unit. The detention facility was constructed of a drilled concrete caissons foundation, concrete modular unit and pre-cast cells structural frame, a concrete modular unit exterior, and a built-up roof system. The project also features Intake, Booking, and Release areas, juvenile remand area, administrative offices, classrooms, and a video visitation room. Other features include negative air flow rooms for the control of infectious diseases, ADA compliant rooms, and elevators. Upon completion, the Lower Buckeye Jail project successfully replaced the antiquated Durango Jail with the largest criminal detention facility in the state of Arizona.
